1986 Mercedes-Benz (W126) 560 SEL

This 1986 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL is an Australian-delivered, fully-original example which has been highly maintained to this date. Under the bonnet is a naturally-aspirated 5.5-litre V8 engine which produces 220kW and 455Nm. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer of the vehicle shows a low 129,090km.

At the top of the Mercedes-Benz range through the 1980s was the W126 full-size luxury sedan. The second-generation S-Class (as it’s now known) was the ultimate in luxury and performance, and featured a highly-bespoke range of engines, body styles and trim levels to match its discerning buyer pool. It was adored by diplomats and dignitaries alike all over the world. A “Second Series” arrived in 1986 featuring subtle updates and stylistic tweaks to improve the model. Not only was the top-level 560 engine enlarged to 5.5L, visual changes included smoother bumpers and side mouldings, new Gullideckel wheels, and a deeper front bumper with a bigger air intake was added. The W126 featured all manner of technology on board which brought new benchmarks for safety, ride comfort, and vehicle efficiency. The 560SEL is the highest specification second-generation S-Class you could have.

This car’s two-tone paintjob is beautifully reminiscent of its era, with dark grey paintwork offset by a grey-painted lower portion. The interior is adorned with grey leather, grey carpeting, and requisite woodgrain trim inlays. The exterior has benefited from a recent ceramic coating. No aftermarket modification is made to this car’s original condition. It rides on a set of 15-inch Gullideckel wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres.

Built in Stuttgart, Germany and delivered new through Yorkstar Motors in Sydney, this car’s provenance is well-documented. It has spent a large deal of its time in its delivery state before being sent down to Victoria and spending time in Geelong. The current owner purchased the vehicle two years ago through Sullivan Kerr in Sandringham, Victoria. Since then it has received a paint correction, reconditioned A/C, rejuvenated timber inlays, and the interior speakers were also replaced along with new factory OEM sourced rear tail lights. All 4 tyres have recently been replaced along with the alloy wheels being refurbished.   The vehicle is said to currently be in perfect working order, according to the owner, including the factory climate control which has been refurbished.

The 560SEL’s exterior presentation is immaculate, given its age. There has obviously been no expense spared in the upkeep of this flagship vehicle. The rich grey paintwork displays no noticeable imperfections, while mirror-like reflections are seen in the panels. The lower grey portion does not exhibit stone chips or road grime which is common for vehicles of the era. Similarly, the chrome detailing is polished to a shine. All four wheels show in good order without kerb rash, as the Michelin tyres retain a good amount of tread. The underside of the vehicle has benefited from a recent ice blasting.

Inside the cabin this vehicle displays similarly untouched. The leather upholstery contains minimal stress marks or creasing, while the extensive carpeting has escaped staining and scuff marks. Some light wear is seen on the driver’s side bolster. Early signs of fade is seen on instrumentation such as the cruise control stalk. Woodgrain trim shows a nice veneer, having recently been replaced, while the headlining displays in excellent order which have all been dry iced along with the underside of the vehicle.

This car will come with all accompanying documentation.
