1985 Mercedes-Benz (S123) 230TE

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz 230TE (S123) is an Australian-delivered car which benefits from a neat specification with a solid service history. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine which outputs 100kW/205Nm to the rear wheels. This car is fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission. It currently displays 310,058km on its odometer.

The well-known Mercedes-Benz W123 (S123) is revered worldwide for its ingrained quality and legendary reliability. It arguably earned Mercedes-Benz its long-running reputation for build quality and over-engineering. The model was popular in-period throughout Germany as taxis, with many examples running-up over a million kilometres on the odometer. Such was its longevity that these cars were then shipped to emerging markets in Africa where they continued running in perfect order. This mechanical simplicity and reliability is the W123’s greatest asset. Wagons, which are designated as S123, are particularly popular thanks to their long-roof station wagon design and are immensely practical with up to 2.8 metres of load length in the boot. These W123 Benzes are a relatively affordable way to get into classic Mercedes-Benz ownership.

This car is finished on the outside in Diamond Blue and the interior features tan upholstery and carpeting. No obvious aftermarket modifications take away from its original specification from when it was delivered new. Original options as-new include the MB-Tex seat upholstery, air-conditioning and central locking – both of these need recommissioning. It now has an aftermarket head unit in place of the original Becker radio unit. The car rides on a set of period-correct 14-inch Mercedes Bundt wheels which come wrapped in Maxxis whitewall tyres.

This car was built in February 1985, complied in Australia in May 1985, and delivered new in June 1985. It was delivered to its first owner through Neville Lindsay’s in Essendon, VIC. The car is now a four-owner example, showing 310,058km on the odometer (which is still working). Servicing has been completed through Mercedes-Benz specialists, including Alan Lennox Motors. The last maintenance was due in 2021, according to the seller.

Exterior condition of this S123 presents decently for a car of its age and mileage. The Diamond Blue paintwork is understood to have been resprayed at some point to freshen the car up, and currently shows in moderate order without obvious marking or scratches. It does show some splitting and chips in areas such as the tailgate, while bubbling is seen around the left-rear wheel guard. Rust spots are seen at the roof rails, rear bumper, and boot edge. Chrome trim displays some early signs of patina, though the exterior rubbers appear to be cracked. Each bumper displays with some indentation. The four wheels show in good condition without curb rash and the Maxxis tyres appear with a good amount of tread.

The cabin shows in used condition throughout, commensurate with its use. The MB-Tex seats appear largely without cracking or damage, though small scuffs are seen on the driver’s seat. More obvious signs of wear and tear are seen on the door cards, carpeting, and seat backs. Some instrumentation plastics show disintegration and the woodgrain centre console has begun to crack. This car has the popular seven-seat rearward-facing third row seating.
