1985 Mercedes-Benz (R107) 380SL

This 1985 Mercedes-Benz (R107) 380SL is a gorgeous Australian-delivered example of Mercedes-Benz’s enduring roadster and presents in original condition. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.8-litre V8 which sends 160kW and 299Nm to the rear wheels. The powertrain is matched to a four-speed automatic transmission. This example currently displays 187,101km on its odometer.

The R107-generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class was one of Mercedes’ longest-running models, such was its popularity and endurance. It succeeds the original SLs including the 300SL Gullwing which was designed for sports-touring. While it took learnings from its predecessors in a variety of disciplines, the R107 was the most future-focused and advanced SL yet. Much of the car was aimed at conquering the North American market. The all-new model combined equal parts sport and luxury to create the most well-rounded SL to date, but it also took learnings from the rest of the range, including an S-Class-rivalling interior. It was also the first time a V8 engine was fitted to an SL-Class.

This 380SL features white exterior paintwork over a blue leather interior and also specifies a blue soft-top roof. A matching white hard-top is also supplied with this car, as seen in photos. The car currently displays in original condition with next to no modifications. It rides on a set of 14-inch Bundt alloy wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle tyres. The interior is highlighted by woodgrain accenting trim.

Built in December 1984, this Australian-delivered car was first delivered new to its original owner in Mosman, NSW in 1985. It has since passed through the hands of three owners, the most recent caretaker purchased it in 2018 from WA. It has enjoyed thorough servicing and preventative maintenance throughout its life, including recent works to the timing chain, new front suspension, replaced injectors, restored dashboard, refurbished transmission, and a new battery. This work took place between 2019 and 2021. Regular servicing has been carried out through MB Classic Star, Sharp Performance, while the most recent service occurred in March 2021 at Pro Star. The owner notes the car has not been in any accidents, however there is a temperamental ABS sensor which sometimes triggers a warning light (ABS has been checked and is operational).

With white paintwork showing in good order and trims displaying tidily, this car’s exterior presents in clean, original condition overall. Some wear and tear is observed throughout, though much of it should be considered commensurate with the car’s age. More obvious signs of paint imperfections and marks is seen around the car’s bumpers, while some rust is seen alongside the side sills. Some small rust spots have been touched up on the hard-top roof. Light patina/weathering can be seen on the car’s grille, adding to its vintage character. All wheels show in good order, while there appears to be a good amount of tread remaining on the tyres.

The interior shows in good order throughout, with blue leather displaying in complete condition, if a little tired. Some edges of the leather are beginning to show wear with repeated use, while early signs of cracking are observed in the bolsters. The dash shows in great condition having been replaced years prior, but the woodgrain console trim shows minor cracking. Carpeting is all original and shows in good condition for its age. This car will be supplied with original service booklets, maintenance receipts, and two sets of keys.
