1985 BMW (E30) 323i John Player Special
This 1985 BMW 323i (E30) John Player Special is a rare and unique Australian-specific special edition BMW which benefits from extensive documentation and accompanying memorabilia. Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine which sends 106kW (143hp) to the rear wheels. The transmission in this car is a five-speed Getrag manual. It currently shows 304,300km on its odometer.
As one of the best handling sedans of all time the BMW E30 3 Series has a solid place in history, all over the world. Developed with famous Teutonic engineering and robust build quality, the E30 benefitted from an impressive level of performance thanks to a choice of six- or four-cylinder powertrains and varying body styles. The six-cylinder 323i was one of the higher-spec model offerings in Australia with a five-speed manual transmission and Bosch fuel injection as standard. It’s this variant which was turned into a special edition by BMW Australia and Frank Gardner to commemorate the success of the John Player Special-sponsored 635CSi in Australian Group C (and Group A) Touring. Gardner’s workshop was responsible for upgrading the E30s, though an official number of editions wasn’t released. Enthusiasts suggest the number of JPS E30s to be below 100 examples.
All John Player Special BMW E30s were finished in the same black and gold colour scheme with cloth sports seats. There have been no aftermarket modifications made to this example and it presents largely in its original specification. This includes kit such as unique badging, body kit, sunroof, tweaked sports suspension with Bilstein dampers and a limited-slip differential. The interior features a set of Recaro sports seats and a leather steering wheel. The car rides on a set of 14-inch gold BBS alloys wrapped in Pirelli tyres.
Complied new in Australia in March 1985 and delivered in May 1985, this E30 was sold through Peter Menere BMW in Moorabbin, VIC. It is now a four-owner car and has been owner by the seller since 2014. Most servicing has been completed through official BMW dealerships, aside from some maintenance completed by independent specialists such as Northern BM and Pier Prestige. The seller maintains that the vehicle is in good running condition.
Exterior presentation shows nicely for an E30 of its age and mileage. The black paintwork shows with tidy reflections, and no obvious paint imperfections can be seen. Likewise, no points of damage are seen. It was resprayed four years ago back to its original colour. All gold striping and badging appears to be in good order, as does all chrome exterior trim. The four gold wheels present without curb rash and the Pirelli Cinturato tyres display a good level of tread.
Inside the cabin this E30 has benefitted from excellent care. The fabric Recaro seats have held up very well to extended use with no obvious tears, fraying or stains seen on the upholstery. The carpeting, headlining, and door cards also show in good condition. A tab to pull the driver’s seat forward is missing. Only one minor crack is seen on this E30’s dash, which is common issue for the model. Instrumentation and the original radio show in good order.
Accompanying books, service history, two keys, and a suite of memorabilia will be provided.
