THE AUCTION IS UNDER PROXY BIDDING
1983 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6
This 1983 Alfa Romeo GTV6 is an Australian-delivered example which benefits from recent refurbishment. Under the bonnet lies a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine which outputs 118kW/213Nm to the rear wheels. The transmission is a five-speed manual. This car’s odometer currently shows 10,412km.
The Alfa Romeo Alfetta was built as a follow-up to the highly-successful 105 Series and made its debut in 1972. Offered as a conventional sedan (Alfetta) and as a sporty liftback (Alfetta GT), Alfa Romeo turned its range of the latter into proper performance cars backed by soulful engines, a superb handling character, and an agile lightweight body. Key enhancements over earlier Alfa sports cars were the De Dion tube independent rear suspension and a lower centre of gravity with better-positioned transaxle. The GTV6 variant was introduced alongside a restyling of the model, bringing six-cylinder power from the Alfa Romeo Alfa 6 saloon. With a larger engine the GTV6 achieved success on the motorsports stage, even taking out the 1987 Australian Rally Championship. Today the GTV6 brings a typical Alfa driving experience at an affordable price point.
Finished in classic red with a black cloth-upholstered interior, this Alfa’s colour combination is quintessential Alfa Romeo. It sports a set of period specific grey bumpers. The car is largely unchanged from its as-delivered specification, though it now equips an aftermarket stereo system with Bluetooth and remote control, plus it has a hand-built exhaust system. It now rides on a set of original 15-inch silver wheels wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato tyres.
Built new in Italy in April 1983 and delivered new through Ray Gulson in Canberra, this GTV6 has had only a handful of owners since new. The current owner believes there have been five owners since the early 1990s. The car was purchased by the current owner, a collector, in June 2021 before subtly restoring the car back to its former glory. Completed works include a refurbished dashboard, new door, boot, and window seals, tidied-up paintwork, and new tyres. Mechanical work was undertaken by Alfa specialists Mauceri Motors who addressed the timing belt, water pump, and a radiator flush. This car’s gearbox needs care when shifting into second and it’s air-conditioning needs a seal replaced.
The fact this example still retains its original paint, the exterior condition is very good for its age. The red paintwork shows no major defects, though some stone chips are observed on the front end. Paint chips and scuffs are seen around the rear boot lid. Replaced door seals are causing some issues with door alignment, though are beginning to get better with continued use. The passenger door appears to be a replacement. All four wheels show no kerb rash and the Pirelli tyres appear near new.
Interior-wise, this GTV6’s cabin shows in good order. The seats do show signs of sun-damaged colour fade, though they don’t exhibit scuffs or tears. No signs of sagging are seen. The trims of the steering wheel, door cards, and dash all appear in good condition, as does the carpeting. All gauges and electrics operate as normal.
This car will come with two keys, original handbooks and manuals, plus recent service receipts.
