1981 Porsche 936 Junior
This 1981 Porsche 936 Junior (Porsche Part Number WAP170000) is a half-scale replica of the 1981 Le Mans-winning Porsche 936 race car driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell. It is a rare collector piece powered by a single-cylinder 206cc Briggs and Stratton four stroke engine which sends 4kW to the rear wheels. Power is sent through a three-speed manual transmission (two forward gears and one reverse), allowing the 936 Junior to hit speeds of up to 50km/h.
The Porsche 936 Junior is no ordinary scale replica. It was designed and developed by Porsche as a celebration after its factory 1981 Le Mans victory and between 50 and 100 are said to have been offered to Porsche VIPs, drivers and team members. Said to be a very detailed rendition of the real thing, the 936 Junior features disc brakes, a limited slip rear axle, adjustable rear wing, coil springs, high and low beam headlights and working tail lights. It measures 273cm long, 100cm wide and 90cm high.
Finished in white with detailed racing stripes, this car also sports the period-correct “Jules” sponsorship logo which was a brand of Christian Dior men’s fragrances. It is operated by an electric starter motor and manual choke, while also featuring 12-volt electrics, pneumatic tyres, hydraulic shocks at the rear, two-piece alloy wheels, horn, single red seat, and fibreglass coachwork on top of a box section chassis.
This single-owner example has been in the same family for 40 years. It came to be in the current owner’s possession after Porsche Melbourne (formerly named Hamilton’s) raffled it off in the early 1980s. The winner bought three tickets and was lucky enough to win the brand new Porsche 936 Junior. In February 2019 this car underwent a full restoration at Chequered Flag Restorations.
The white paintwork and livery is in immaculate condition and there is no damage to the fibreglass bodywork. This car has been very well taken care of throughout its life, and still presents perfectly following its 2019 restoration. The interior features a red seat, rear view mirrors, a three-speed gear shifter and a three spoke steering wheel. Every part of this unique classic functions perfectly.
Few of these Porsche-commissioned classics will have been taken such good care of over the last 40 years, much less undergone a total restoration. Not only are they impossibly difficult to find, this one is mechanically sound and with excellent presentation to match. It comes ready to enjoy as a collector’s item or as a fun weekend toy.
