1980 Porsche 924 Turbo

This 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo is an Australian-delivered Porsche sports car with modest mileage and clean specification. Power is derived from a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine which sends 132kW/245Nm to the rear wheels. The transmission in this car is a five-speed manual. The odometer of this car displays 92,189km.

Replacing the Porsche 912 and 914 as the German brand’s entry-level model, the Porsche 924 introduced a sleek new design for the brand which had previously won much of its fame from the iconic 911 shape. Though it was designed shortly after the more powerful and better-known Porsche 928, the 924 was actually the model to introduce a number of firsts for the brand. These include being the first front-engined Porsche with a rear-wheel-drive configuration, and it was also the first Porsche to receive a fully automatic gearbox. It wasn’t long before Porsche realised it needed a faster version, which is when the 924 Turbo was introduced. This variant applied turbocharged power to the platform’s near-perfect weight and handling balance to effectively become a genuine sports car stepping-stone towards the higher-specification 911. It is now enjoying a subtle uprising as an achievable classic Porsche entry-point.

Painted in white on the exterior and featuring a grey Berber cloth-upholstered cabin, this 924 Turbo wears its subdued colour combination well. It is described as being largely original to its delivery specification and wears no obvious aftermarket modifications. The removable sunroof comes with an original leather bag for stowage. It rides on a set of original 15-inch Porsche ATS alloy wheels, wrapped in Pirelli tyres.

Built new in Neckarsulm, Germany and delivered new to Australia, this 924 Turbo has been looked after throughout its life. The current owner estimates he is the fourth owner overall and has held the car for 15 months. The owner prior to him was a doctor who split his time between states, which explains the low kilometres for its age. Recent servicing has been completed at transaxle Porsche specialist Hartech Automotive. The next service is due in April 2023. The owner notes it may sometimes need throttle help in cold start conditions, but it quickly comes to temperature and runs reliably.

Exterior condition shows in average order. There are myriad stone chips and paint imperfections seen around the car, most notably on the driver’s side door, the driver’s side quarter panel, door edges, front bumpers, bonnet, and passenger door panel. It would benefit from a full respray. All four wheels display in good condition without noticeable kerb rash, while the Pirelli tyres are near new.

Inside the cabin this car presents in original condition though it is beginning to show its age in some areas. The driver’s side seat shows tearing in the fabric and the glovebox needs to be realigned. Otherwise, seat upholstery remains clean of staining and the carpeting appears undamaged. The dashboard shows cracks as is common with cars of its era. According to the owner the original radio is working but is not wired.

This car will be sold with a suite of recent receipts, spare tyre, and partial tool kit.
