1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II

This 1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow II is an Australian-delivered British classic presenting in clean and original condition. It is powered by a 6.75-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine outputting 141kW (189hp) to the rear wheels through a three-speed transmission. This example currently displays 173,346km on the odometer since new.

The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was a striking change from the Silver Cloud before it and was first introduced in 1965, though this auction concerns the Silver Shadow II which was a significant model revision over the original. The Silver Shadow is most notable for its unitary body and chassis construction that brought vast improvements in packaging and luxuriousness. But the Silver Shadow II received appointments including alloy and rubber bumpers, new rack and pinion steering with enhanced handling, and a thoroughly revised interior. It achieves a high level of ride quality due to the a mix between a conventional hydraulic self-levelling suspension system as well as Citroen’s proprietary hydropneumatic suspension.

Finished in the stately combination of gold paintwork and cream leather interior, this Silver Shadow II is in original condition without obvious modification. The interior features woodgrain trim, factory cruise control, and electric seats, while exterior highlights include headlight wipers and a theft-deterring alarm for the Spirit of Ecstasy emblem. The car rides on a set of Rolls-Royce wheels painted in chrome with body-coloured accent. These wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone tyres.

This Australian-delivered car was built in early 1979 and was acquired relatively recently by its current owner. It was purchased by the previous owner as a wedding car for his daughter. It has enjoyed garaged cover for much of its life. According to the current owner, it starts, runs and drives smoothly. Its last documented service occurred in 1986 at 70,000km, though interim maintenance has occurred including a recent complete brake overhaul. The owner notes a minor quirk where the car doesn’t slot into gear after starting the car – this is fixed after the car is restarted and likely relates to a faulty relay.

Exterior condition of this Rolls-Royce is very decent for its age and mileage. The gold paintwork shines nicely in the sun and shows no overt scratching or body damage. However, some sub-standard paint touch ups are identified in areas such as the rear wheel guards and on the bonnet. There is also a minor dent above the left-hand-side tail light. Exterior chrome trim looks in good order, while the expansive grille and Spirit of Ecstasy displays well. No signs of curb rash are seen on the wheels, though they might benefit from polishing. The tyres retain a good amount of tread.

In the cabin the original cream leather upholstery shows in fine condition and the seats themselves hold their original shape. Some subtle scuffing and creasing is observed near the bolsters, while tiny tears are noticed near the seat adjusters. The headlining and chrome detailing looks in fine order for the most part. However, more obvious signs of deterioration are seen the woodgrain trim pieces, which show veneer flaking off. Paint chips and paint fade is observed in the door jambs. The carpets could use a steam clean.

This car will be sold with an owner’s manual, service history, original purchase delivery docket, some maintenance receipts, plus other original documents and booklets.
