1979 Ferrari 400 Automatic - One Owner

This 1979 Ferrari 400 is an Australian-delivered, one-owner example of Ferrari’s luxurious sporting grand tourer, which presents as a highly original car. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.8-litre V12 engine which sends 228kW (306hp) to the rear wheels. This powertrain is fitted with a three-speed automatic transmission. The car currently shows 49,008 miles.

Introduced in 1976 and revised with fuel injection in 1979, the Ferrari 400 proves that Ferrari ownership needn’t be limited to manual drivers and two people only. The 400 is a 12-cylinder touring car which featured luxury appointments and performance fit for the Ferrari name. It was also the first Ferrari to feature an automatic transmission. Pininfarina penned the interesting boxy design which built upon the 365 GT4 base, with entire production spanning from 1972 until 1989 – one of Ferrari’s longest-running model lines. It is now enjoyed as an affordable way into Ferrari V12 ownership, with well-kept examples steadily creeping up in value on the used car market.

The specification of this Ferrari 400 sees silver exterior paintwork paired with red leather upholstery inside. Woodgrain trim inserts are a highlight inside the cabin, while subtle chrome trim accenting is seen on the outside. No obvious aftermarket modifications are seen on the vehicle which preserves its original specification. This 400 sits on a set of period specific 15-inch five-spoke Ferrari wheels which are wrapped in BF Goodrich tyres.

Built in Maranello in 1978 and delivered new through Lance Dixon Ferrari in 1979, this Ferrari 400 is a one-owner example from new. It is a multiple-award winner in various Concours d’Elegance categories, as evidenced through the trophies depicted in the gallery. The seller notes it was resprayed by Canberra Motors in 2015. It has always been taken care of by Ferrari dealerships and specialist independent dealerships. The last service was undertaken in January 2022 by Benicia Motors which addressed the brakes and window cables. New tyres have recently been fitted.

Exterior condition of this Ferrari 400 is virtually unmarked. The silver paintwork shows in remarkable order, having been repainted a few years ago, while exterior trimwork shows subtle patina. A thorough detail would lift this car for fastidious buyers, though all exterior panels show in very good condition already and no signs of body damage are seen. All four wheels show in decent condition without curb rash, while the BF Goodrich tyres retain a deep level of tread.

On the interior this car presents in used, but cared-for, condition. The red leather seats retain a good original shape but displays some signs of creasing and scuffing, especially on the driver’s side. Elsewhere, the carpeting, dashboard and centre console trim all show in good condition without obvious marking.

A comprehensive suite of original documentation and receipts will be supplied with this car, the personalised plates are not included in the sale.
