1974 BMW (E9) 3.0 CS

This 1974 BMW 3.0 CS (E9) is an Australian-delivered, three-owner example of an iconic sports coupe. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.0-litre inline-six-cylinder engine which sends 134kW (180 hp) to the rear wheels. This car’s transmission is a four-speed automatic. The odometer currently shows 58,173km.

The BMW E9 formed part of BMW’s Neue Klasse platform which was introduced through the 1960s. The E9 is a sports coupe which utilised the iconic M30 six-cylinder powertrain inside a Karmann-designed coupe body. Production first began with the 2800CS, but updated examples such as this 3.0 CS are among the most desirable for their unique styling and more powerful engine. This car kickstarted BMW’s reputation as a world-class sports car manufacturer off the back of motorsports success with the 3.0 CSL “Batmobile”. The 3.0 CSL competed in touring car racing across Europe as well as several entries to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In current age the BMW E9 is held as one of the greatest BMW designs of all time and remains an extremely polished driving experience if kept in good working order.

Painted in a light blue over a blue leather interior, this BMW’s specification presents beautifully even today. The bodywork is accented by polished chrome trim, while the interior is finished with woodgrain panel inserts for the dash. There are no aftermarket modifications made to this car aside from an aftermarket radio and alarm system. The car rides on a set of period 14-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama tyres.

This car is an Australian-specified example which took part in BMW’s tourist delivery programme. It is now a three-owner car, with the current owner taken custodianship 11 years ago. The car has undergone restoration in years past, notably receiving a thorough body and mechanical refresh through the late 1980s. Most-recent servicing took place at Ultratune in Cheltenham, Victoria where the carburettors were tuned and the battery was replaced. Other servicing was completed at Eurocar Repairs in Cheltenham. The owner states the car is in great mechanical condition and is willing to sort a RWC.

Exterior condition is in good order for its age and mileage. The blue paint appears with good reflections in the light and chrome trim shows no overt tarnishing. There are finer points of damage such as paint cracking above the headlight housings, a crack in the bodywork below the right-hand side of the front bumper, rust bubbles in the bonnet, a rust bubble on the right-front quarter panel, and two tiny chips near the BMW badge on the bootlid. Minor paint chips are seen in the door edges, while the right tail-light has splintered. Rubbers are deteriorating with age, including the windscreen surround. The wheels show in fair condition without kerb rash.

The interior has been retrimmed in recent years, as evidenced through the cabin’s fantastic condition. The blue upholstery holds its shape well and displays no overt marks or creases. Trimwork of the dash and woodgrain inlays is similarly well presented. Wood trim on the door cards has worn. The car’s interior light is weak, while a piece of driver’s side door handle trim is missing. Two speakers were removed when the cabin was redone, however these will be supplied.

All accompanying documentation will be supplied with this car. It’ll also come with the original tool kit, new gear console, and new door handles.
