1974 Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce

This 1974 Alfa Romeo 2000 GT Veloce is a matching-numbers Australian-delivered example sporting its original-specification paint, engine, and gearbox. Power is derived from a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine which sends 97kW (130hp) to the rear wheels. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted to this car, with the car itself only weighing 1028kg. This car currently shows 60,879 miles on its odometer.

Few Australians would have been familiar with the Alfa Romeo brand before the 1960s, though the 105 Series was one of the first models to champion the Italian marque Down Under. First arriving with engines not exceeding 1600cc in size, the natural progression of the 105 model line throughout the late 60s and into the 70s resulted in this flagship variant, the 2000 GT Veloce with a powerful 2.0-litre engine. In addition to a larger engine with enhanced performance the 2000 GTV also received revised styling both inside and out. While many looked past the little Alfa 2000 GTV towards period cars with bigger engines such as the Ford Falcon and Holden Monaro, the Alfa’s diminutive size and impeccable handling saw it zip around tight switchback corners and country roads faster than its rivals.

Finished in Alfa Rosso 501 on the exterior and matched with a reupholstered black leather interior, this 2000 GTV presents in largely original condition with matching-numbers engine and gearbox. The original wheels have been replaced with period correct 14-inch black Momo alloy wheels, wrapped in Michelin tyres.

This Australian-delivered car has been lovingly cared for throughout its life, having received extensive work to keep it showing in good order and running well. Much restorative work took place in 1989 including a fully respray, as well as some body work. The seats were retrimmed at some point with black leather, while an engine rebuild also took place around that time. The owner describes the engine as running strong and sounding smooth.

The exterior condition of this Alfa 2000 GTV presents nicely, with decent Rosso 501 paintwork and complete trim highlights. Though this car was resprayed, the owner notes the presence of paint bubbling, and suggests some body panel rectification could take place. Much of the restorative overhaul in 1989 has allowed this car to escape large amounts of rust, though some smaller rust spots are found on the lower portion of the passenger door and some minor bubbling of paint at the A and B pillars. Importantly, the owner maintains the underside of the car is in good condition. Light patina can be seen on the exterior chrome trim, adding to the car’s vintage appeal. The Momo wheels show no major signs of damage and the Michelin tyres retain a good amount of tread.

Interior-wise, this car has fared very well over its lifetime. Black leather upholstery shows in good condition with no overt marks or tears, while the seats themselves hold good shape. Original woodgrain trim shows minimal signs of deterioration, though the panel on the dash exhibits slight cracking. This seems fair considering the car’s age and mileage. Both the headlining and carpeting show in good order. The owner notes the ventilation grilles will need attention, and the fan and heater box will require some fettling to re-commission.

Two sets of keys including electronic immobiliser fobs are included, while the car will also be supplied with an extensive service/maintenance folder.
