1973 Leyland Moke

This 1973 Leyland Moke has undergone a recent restoration to its current immaculate condition, and has travelled less than 100kms since. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine which sends 29kW (39hp) to the front wheels. A four-speed manual transmission is in use. The odometer currently displays 26,107 miles.

Far from its most common use case today which sees it as a lovable beach buggy, the Leyland Moke was initially designed as an off-road-focused military machine. Sharing much of its design, parts, and engineering with the original Mini, the Moke was also designed by Sir Alec Issigonis who was keen on stealing military market share from Land Rover. However, its low ground clearance and small-diameter wheels quickly saw it ruled-out from military use. Its focus then turned towards civilian applications and recreation. The Moke grew in popularity for its simplistic mechanics and easy-going, open-air nature which capitalised on hot summer nights and coastal cruising. Like the original Mini, the Moke was manufactured in Australia and exported to a variety of markets worldwide before production ended in 1993.

This example has been repainted in Audi’s Nardo Grey colour and features white-painted highlights such as side mirrors, bumper bars, wheels, and seat frames. The interior features a pair of grey fabric seats, a woodgrain Mountney steering wheel, and rubber wash-out flooring. The car rides on a set of 13-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Rapid P309 tyres. A full canvas roof with frames are included in the sale.

Built by the Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia in 1973, this Moke’s well-documented maintenance history is evidenced through photos. Before its current owner, the car was owned by a family friend who purchased it from a local council. According to the owner who has owned it the last 25 years it has not been in any accidents. In recent years the car has undergone restoration which included rust removal, respray, rebuilt motor and gearbox, suspension rebuild, subframe reconstruction, new wiring harness, new tyres and wheels, new steering rack, new exhaust/muffler, new upholstery, and installation of a battery isolator. The owner states the car could use a tune to adjust the fuel mixture, and the fuel gauge needle stops at half-way.

Considering its recent repaint, this Moke’s exterior presentation is near-immaculate. The Nardo Grey paintwork shows in good condition with no signs of scratching or paint fade, while the white portions appear in similarly good order. Some parts such as the fuel filler and gauges were left with patina to add to this car’s originality. The owner notes some minor points of paint chipping, though nothing that overly detracts from this car’s clean presentation. The four white wheels show no signs of curb rash or damage, while the tyres appear near-new.

The interior of this Moke shows in good order thanks to new-upholstered seats and repainted panels. Some elements such as the switchgear and speedo have been left original. New lap sash seatbelts have been fitted. The rubber flooring appears without major scuffing.

This car will come with a suite of receipts and documentation.
