1972 BMW 2002 tii Touring

This 1972 BMW 2002 Tii Touring a is a rare variant of an even rarer body style. It has undergone recent refurbish and is a two-owner example since new. Under the bonnet is a 2.2-litre twin-carburettored four-cylinder engine which sends power to the rear wheels. This powertrain is mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The odometer of this vehicle current displays 52,587 miles.

Any BMW enthusiast will tell you the 2002 was the genesis of BMW’s sporting reputation. The story goes that two BMW executives one day discovered that they had each fitted larger 2.0-litre engines to their 1600-2 entry-level cars. After realising what a stroke of genius the larger engine was, they jointly-proposed a production run of the bigger-engined models, helped by American demand for larger engines. The Tii became the top-of-the-line variant in the range, but fewer people know about the Touring body. In Touring guise, with a large rear hatchback and a practical nature, the 2002 Tii is a rare beast which still turns heads today. These days they’re difficult to find on the open market.

Finished in gloss orange paint on the exterior and upholstered inside with black vinyl/fabric print trim, this Touring’s colour scheme stands out. Elements of the exterior such as the bumpers and side shoulder line are finished in chrome trim. The owner states this vehicle sits in unmolested condition, aside from fitting a twin-carb Ti engine (original Tii engine supplied) and a limited-slip differential. No other items of aftermarket modification are listed. The car rides on a set of 13-inch BMW wheels wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato tyres.

Built new in Munich, Germany in 1972 and delivered new through the United Kingdom, this 2002 Touring originally started life as a left-hand drive vehicle before being converted. It has lived a sheltered life as evidenced by its low odometer and is now a two-owner example. The current seller purchased the car out of South Africa and has owned the vehicle as part of his own private collection for the past 20 years. In 2015 it underwent a refurbishment which saw it repainted to its current shade of orange. It has participated in Motorclassica 2015 and has been featured by Unique Cars.

Exterior presentation of this 2002 Touring is immaculate, especially for the vehicle’s age. The orange paintwork displays without damage or scratching, and still retains true reflections after being repainted seven years ago. The chromework appears largely polished and no evidence of denting is seen. The four wheels appear without kerb rash and the Pirelli tyres retain a deep level of tread.

Interior condition is similarly excellent. The upholstery shows in good order without obvious nicks or tears, and carpeting contains no stains or damage. The dashboard looks to be in fine order, as does the instrumentation and switchgear. Door cards show some wear and tear at touch points, though nothing major takes away from this car’s clean condition.

This car’s original Tii engine and differential along with a spare painted and matched rear hatch and two front guards are included in the sale. It will also be supplied with a suit of history and paperwork.
