1970 Ford (XW) Fairmont Sedan
This 1970 Ford Fairmont (XW) sedan is an impeccably kept Australian muscle car classic. Originally a 221 cubic inch, pre cross flow 6 cylinder, it is now powered by a worked 347 cubic inch Windsor V8 engine outputting 425kW (570hp) at the engine, and the drivetrain is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. It has just undergone a thorough engine build using quality parts and expertise. Reflective of this car’s excellent condition, the odometer shows 53,467.
The XW-generation Ford Fairmont was produced between 1969 and 1970 and is the luxury-oriented variant of the Falcon. It was the go-to choice for the Ford fan after a blend of luxury and performance, and featured heavily revised exterior and interior styling such as a jet-aircraft inspired dash layout. While high-performance Falcon GT-HOs traditionally received all the attention, XW Fairmonts are also creeping up in value and desirability. Finding complete and original XWs is becoming a difficult prospect as resto-modders tend to use the Fairmonts as a base to build GT tribute cars. The classic squared-off XW shape is arguably the best of the XR-XY series Falcons and remains popular with Ford fanatics to this day.
Presenting in the popular Starlight Blue exterior colour over a rare Dove Grey vinyl, this XW Fairmont retains a great deal of its original equipment and specification. It stocks Venetian blinds over the rear window, chrome exterior detailing, and 14-inch chrome wheels. Its interior is highlighted by wood panelling, a B&M T-bar style ratchet shifter, and an Autogauge RPM counter. It also stocks a 9-inch limited-slip differential rated to 1000hp, a TCE stall converter, and a C4 three-speed manualised gearbox rated to 800hp. Quality parts were used through the latest build which saw this XW fitted with new Ford Motorsport engine block, new Windsor pistons, new Bryant supercar crank, new heads, new carburettor and a new exhaust system.
This XW Fairmont was built in 1970 and complied in April of that year. Delivered new through Degville Ford in Adelaide, South Australia, this car has since passed through three separate owners. It last underwent a full mechanical and paint restoration 20 years ago and still presents smartly today. Recent engine and service work has been completed by Dandy Engines in Carrum Downs, Victoria.
The exterior paintwork of this Starlight Blue example shows in good order today, with a great amount of gloss from the paintwork and chrome exterior detailing that shines prominently. There are no noticeable nicks, marks, or scratches to the car’s bodywork which still presents in fantastic edition considering the car’s age. All four chrome wheels look immaculate and are wrapped in Nankang tyres which show a great level of tread depth.
Interior-wise, the cabin of this XW Fairmont is fitted with luxurious appointments such as wood trim and chrome accents that present smartly. The Dove Grey vinyl upholstery is largely intact and complete apart from a tear in the bolster of the driver’s seat. Some discolouration can be seen on the upholstery, though it is minimal. Elsewhere, the car’s interior presents incredibly well for a 1970 build year. The car retains its original Ford factory radio.
