1966 Ford Thunderbird

This 1966 Ford Thunderbird Landau hard-top has been tastefully modified and presents in clean condition inside and out. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 390 cubic inch (6.4-litre) V8 engine which sends 235kW (315hp) to the rear wheels through a three-speed transmission. It can complete the zero to 100km/h run in around nine seconds. This example currently displays 90,127 miles on its odometer since new.

The Ford Thunderbird was personal luxury vehicle to compete with the Buick Riviera, Pontiac Grand Prix and Chrysler 300K. These large two-door cars were the ultimate in sumptuous American-built transport in the 1960s and 1970s, though the Ford Thunderbird was arguably the most popular of all. Eleven generations of the Thunderbird were built in total, this car being a fourth-generation car, which were produced from 1964 until 1966. Units built in 1966 benefitted from a more powerful V8 engine, a flatter bonnet, restyled front fenders, new grille, stylised bumpers, and new headlight housings. The Thunderbird was hugely popular through film and popular culture, starring in movies such as James Bond films Goldfinger and Thunderball, as well as famously featuring in Thelma and Louise.

Painted in a pearl white with a matte effect, this car’s specification is set off against a black vinyl interior with woodgrain trim elements inside. Aside from items like the paint (which was resprayed from Ivy Green years ago), wheels, and the steering wheel, this vehicle presents in original condition. It rides on a set of American Racing forged aluminium wheels wrapped in Atlas whitewall tyres.

This matching-numbers car was built in the Wixom Ford facility in Michigan, US in 1966. It was originally a Californian car before being shipped to Australia. The current owner purchased the partially restored vehicle from a deceased estate earlier in 2021. It is described as 95 per cent complete; just minor bugs to sort out such as a minor vibration at 50mph, air conditioning/heating needs to be reconnected, the electrically operated driver’s side flipper window is inoperative, and a few minor engine oil leaks. Recent works include new front and rear brakes, brake booster & master cylinder, new water pump, and some radiator hosing was replaced. Previously there are receipts to indicate that in 2014 the power steering hoses were replaced along with both engine mounts. In 2017 the automatic transmission was serviced & filter replaced & the front suspension was rebuilt including ball joints (upper & lower) upper wishbone shafts & bushes, lower control arm bushes, sway bar bushes & links, idler arm bushes, all four tie rod ends & shock absorbers front & rear. In the same year there are receipts to indicate the power steering pump & steering box were rebuilt along with a new two inch sports exhaust system was fitted. The owner now states the car starts, drives, steers, and stops nicely. It is also fitted with an aftermarket imobiliser.

The exterior condition of this Thunderbird presents very well for its age and mileage. Having been repainted by the previous owner, the matte white paintwork still shows in great order and the chrome exterior detailing looks in great condition. No obvious body damage is observed. Some badgework is beginning to show signs of patina. The car’s vinyl Landau hard-top displays in good condition. All four wheels show no sign of curb rash and the tyres retain a good amount of tread.

Likewise, the interior remains in very good condition, having fared remarkably well over its lifetime. The black vinyl upholstery displays no overt signs of wear and tear, while the dash, door cards and centre console show in good order. The owner notes that on the driver’s side some carpeting has worn through, though floor mats cover the damage.

This car will be sold with a suite of receipts detailing recent maintenance works.
