1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL Pagoda

This 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230SL Pagoda is a well maintained example which has been with its current owner for over 18 years. Under the bonnet lies a naturally-aspirated 2.3-litre inline-six-cylinder engine which outputs 110kW/196Nm to the rear wheels. This car features a desirable four-speed manual transmission. The odometer currently shows 38,518km.

While the iconic Mercedes-Benz 300SL steals the limelight as the first SL, the iconic W113 is a fantastic car in its own right and values continue to rise. More commonly known as the Pagoda, the W113 continued the lineage into a new era bringing advanced styling and a sporting driving characteristic. The Pagoda was particularly popular in the United States where it opened the door for Mercedes’ reputation of strong build quality, steadfast reliability, and sumptuous luxuries, to shine through to a new market. You’ll find the W113 common in period American films where it earned a stylish reputation as “the luxury car to have”. While most were configured as soft-top roadsters, a 2+2 hard-top was available. In today’s market the Pagoda is rare to see on the open market, making this offering a unique opportunity to indulge in vintage Mercedes-Benz ownership.

Painted in a bright red with matching body-coloured hub caps, this SL’s colour combination can’t be missed. Offsetting the bold exterior is a cream-upholstered interior, while a black roof is fitted. No aftermarket modifications have been fitted to this car, however a set of seat covers have been fitted for upholstery protection. The car rides on a set of 14-inch Mercedes wheels wrapped in Sava tyres.

Built new in Stuttgart, Germany in 1965 and delivered new to Hong Kong, this SL has been well-cared for since new. It now presents as a three-owner car. The current owner has held the vehicle for 18 years where it has spent much of its time in rural Victoria. Mercedes-Benz Horsham worked on the car through 2004-2010 and it’s now maintained by a Mercedes specialist in Ararat, VIC. Earlier in 2022 it received repairs to its radiator, while the last full service was completed in March 2021. According to the owner the vehicle is in terrific running condition with no rust.

This car’s presentation is its strong-suit – with obvious care taken over the years it now shows in great order for vehicle of its age. The red paintwork displays no overt blemishes and retains nice reflections in the light, while the chromework is polished to a bright shine. The soft-top roof pulls taut over the frame, though elements of the roof mechanism are beginning to tarnish with age, seen on the underside. The wheels generally show in good condition aside from some minor paint flaking, and tyres retain decent tread.

Though the upholstery is hidden by seat covers in this instance, interior presentation is clean overall. The seats show no overt tears or scuffing and retain their original shape. Signs of scuffing and minor tears in trim are seen on the dash upholstery. Door cards show without wear and tear, though the carpeting does show signs of staining around the transmission tunnel.
