1955 Jaguar XK140 SE+C DHC
This 1955 Jaguar XK140 SE+C Drophead Coupe is an immaculately restored example which has recently undergone a full engine rebuild. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.4-litre inline six-cylinder engine which outputs 157kW (210hp) to the rear wheels. This sports car is fitted with a four-speed manual transmission with over drive. The odometer currently displays 6,499 miles.
Launched as the marque’s first Post War sports car, the Jaguar XK120 was an instant hit. Its jaw-dropping coupe shape and brilliant handling were appreciated in both Europe as well as America, but it wasn’t long before the British brand introduced a host of improvements with the XK140 in 1954. Subtle exterior changes included a more substantial front fascia and revised grille, more power was delivered by the inline-six engine, and stronger torsion bars aided body rigidity. Two body styles were available – the Roadster and a Drophead Coupe. The latter had a bulkier lined canvas roof, wind-up windows, and a better-integrated windscreen. It also added walnut furnishings. The Jaguar XK140 was renowned for its relative low cost against period alternatives, and motorsport success.
Finished in stunning silver paintwork over a tan interior, this XK’s specification is period perfect. The exterior features a grey canvas roof and chrome accents, while the cabin is highlighted by walnut panelling. This car also selects the Special Equipment pack which brings twin exhaust pipes, lightened flywheel, and high-lift camshafts. It rides on a set of 16-inch centre-lock wire wheels wrapped in near new Michelin tyres.
Manufactured new in Coventry, England in 1955, this XK140 was delivered new to its first owners in Masterton, New Zealand. It has passed through the hands of eight owners since – the second-to-last being the Classic Car Museum in Auckland, NZ. It remained on display in the museum for 11 years before the current owner purchased it. The car received a restoration by renowned workshop Auto Restorations in Christchurch in 2011, before it was imported to Melbourne in 2012. Since arriving in Melbourne the car has been displayed at Motorclassica and has been maintained by Power Play. The car’s engine was rebuilt with Power Play in 2019.
The exterior condition of this XK140 is remarkable, given the car’s age. The silver paintwork appears in great order without noticeable imperfections or scratches, though some points of minor stone chipping are observed. Chromework is polished to a fine shine, while original badging and componentry appears in great condition. The paired canvas roof shows in decent condition, though obviously doesn’t see much use due to creasing and subtle staining. The wire wheels show no signs of damage and the tyres appear with decent tread.
This car’s cabin shows in excellent order with tan leather upholstery showing in complete condition, retaining a great original shape. Carpeting also presents in fine condition, with additional floor mats. No major signs of damage are seen on the door cards or walnut trim. All instrumentation appears in good order.
This car will come with a suite of receipts and original documentation to detail its history.
